Dear Professor Bethe:
As you may recall, when you were at Stanford in the Spring,
we took advantage of your presence to launch a Stanford chapter of
SENSE. It was dormant over the summer, but we managed our first
public meeting in November attended by about 50 people. Tom
Connolly talked about waste disposal, Richard Rudman from Electric
Power Research Institute talked about electric power requirements,
and Terry Trumbull of GE talked about the legal consequences of the
California initiative. Connolly did a pretty good job, but the two
others were not well prepared; Rudman had the usual kind of statistics
of exponential growth (far inferior to your impressive charts of
decline of other energy sources), and Trumbull merely spluttered
with indignation.
Tentatively we are considering concentrating on the technical
community. Our idea is to challenge the pro-initiative people to
a debate on the technical issues before a technical audience with
an objective panel or something and to get as much publicity as
possible for this. We also are planning an anti-initiative general
poster.
Please put me on your mailing list for any general information
SENSE puts out.
